Case Study 5 | Gearbox Oil Filtration
Custom Designed System to Restore Gearbox Oil Condition
Lubemaster designed this custom oil cleaning unit for friction drive hose and power reeler gearboxes on a stacker/reclaimer at a port facility.
These gearboxes produce high levels of metal wear particles because the friction clutches operate under extreme conditions. In addition, the high oil viscosity makes the clutches difficult to move. As contamination increases, gearbox performance can decline quickly. Wear rates can also rise significantly.
Consequently, the port facility required a high-efficiency gearbox oil filtration solution that could restore oil cleanliness and improve equipment reliability.
Restoring Oil to Near-New Condition
The Lubemaster filtration unit uses high-efficiency 3μm filter elements to remove fine particulate contamination and metallic wear debris from the oil.
As a result, the system restores heavily contaminated gearbox oil to near-new condition.
Furthermore, the filtration process helps maintain cleaner operating conditions throughout the gearbox system. This reduces contamination-related wear and supports longer oil life. Instead of replacing the oil prematurely, the facility can continue operating with cleaner, more reliable lubrication.

Benefits of Custom Gearbox Oil Filtration
Using a custom-designed Lubemaster oil cleaning system provides several operational benefits:
- Removes fine metal wear particles
- Restores gearbox oil cleanliness
- Supports smoother gearbox operation
- Extends oil service life
- Reduces contamination-related wear
- Minimizes downtime and maintenance costs
- Reduces the need for premature oil replacement
High-Efficiency Oil Cleaning for Heavy Industry
Lubemaster oil filtration systems are designed for demanding industrial applications including mining, ports, bulk handling and heavy equipment operations.
Custom-built systems can be engineered to suit specific gearbox configurations, oil viscosities and contamination challenges while maintaining cleaner operating conditions and improving equipment reliability.
